Jorge Gonzalez's Website and Larissa Leal's Website

Jorge's project helped to show some of the improvements Corpus has involved themselves in as a community. I think we lack giving Corpus the credit they deserve when it comes to prevention of things happening such as the seawall as Jorge talked about about also my topic before the seawall was built, the lighthouse. The Seawall was built in order to prevent another hurricane like the one in 1919 from happening again so a wall that extends from Ocean Drive to Downtown was built and elevated higher to prevent an over flow due to how close we are to water. After reading this information I learned some similarities in Jorge and my project by the need of prevention Corpus accomplishes. Another related website was Larissa's regarding the port of Corpus Christi and how it was beneficial to Corpus's economic growth. Corpus port is extended to Aransas Pass by a canal that was built to help good go in and out of the port. The main purpose of the Lighthouse was to protect the port from getting destroyed as Pearl Harbor so it is nice to learn the history of the port and the danger it overcomed and success it has accomplished.

FINAL REFLECTION

The lighthouse was probably the most difficult topic to do because of it taking place so long ago and was taken down so early that we didn't have the chance to experience it and acknowledge it. But lucky me, the library always contains things from the past and was able to find two books on my topic to help me finish with the information I was still curious and hopeful I would find. I also was able to find my topics own personal historical marker and made me feel accomplished because hey, at least someone in the community found it as important as I did!

Putting it all together

Keeping up with the blog has probably been the most difficult thing to accomplish yet. I have everything I want to say while I'm at school and then when I finally make it home I am lost for words and forgetful. Anyways, this year has been the busiest year yet but I am happy that I was assigned to look up history on Corpus. I think while your so busy with trying to get things done, you forget to enjoy the little things in life like seeing history that we have in our own community, things we can relate to and say, 'hey I've been there!" After going to the library for the final product of my website, I learned different stories and myths people believed about the lighthouse and learned more information about my topic in books the library contained. Although it involved plenty of digging I think I did a good job on finding things resourceful towards my topic.

Corpus Christi Lighthouse

After going over the incident in Pearl Harbor of the surprise attack it sparked my interest of knowing what Corpus did back than after hearing about the incident? Well I did some research on my historical topic concerning the Corpus Christi Lighthouse and the help that it brought during the Civil War. I went through some digital archives and discovered pictures of the Lighthouse and the historical marker they now have since they tore it down. The purpose of the Lighthouse was to help serve as a beacon for incoming missiles and while discovering so it helped me reveal dates and stories of time people believed the lighthouse was a threat.

Scavenger Hunt Marker #1- Courthouse

After taking a journey to the City Courthouse in Corpus Christi, I came across our first marker in the local history scavenger hunt that we had to find. I observed and read the marker and discovered that Miss Rose Dunne was a English teacher who taught Mexican Americans and the reason for her importance is because after her dedication, they built Cheston L. Health School that caused expansion in school enrollment for Mexican Americans.

Celebrating Buc Days

After interviewing my dad on his experience at Buc Days I learned that almost the whole time he mentioned eating and hanging out with all of his friends at the carnival but hating the fact that he had to wake up early just to get a good spot. Buc Days is one of the biggest celebrations we have in Corpus where we create experiences and memories with all the people we know and see inside the parade. The Buc Days celebration is important to Corpus because it is a community involvement and a great way to gain money for scholarships.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Andrea Hernandez and my purpose for this blog is to cherish and inform the public or anybody reading my blog, the importance of history in Corpus Christ. Many of us have lived in Corpus our whole lives and have never learned anything about Corpus Christi and it is in my opinion, important to know about your city. My first topic for studying local history in Corpus is the lighthouse that we've had. The Corpus Christi lighthouse brings importance because since we have one of the largest ports, a brick lighthouse was built to serve as a beacon for vessels approaching the port so, in result it kept from a Pearl Harbor incident happening again.
